Module 9: Art Making/Material Exploration Drawings - Exploring Line

My dominant hand is my right hand. I chose to draw using a pencil because I was more familiar with drawing using it.

Using my hands as the subject for a drawing was interesting. It was interesting to draw my hands using both dominant and non-dominant hand because I knew that drawing with my dominant hand would be easier. However, drawing with my non-dominant hand was a challenge, but actually my drawing did turn out not as bad as a I thought it would.

The left hand was drawn by my dominant hand and the lines in the drawing are clearer compared to the right hand which was drawn by my non-dominant hand. The right hand that was drawn looked more like a sketch because I could not draw more defined lines using my non-dominant hand. I would consider using my non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future because

Module 9: Video Reviews

I selected the videos “The Drawings of Michelangelo” and “Albrecht Durer: Image of a Master” because I am interested in learning more about different artists and their works, as well as their contributions to art.

The video “The Drawings of Michelangelo” discusses Michelangelo’s works, techniques, and how his style developed through time. Also, Michelangelo’s oldest works were showed in the video, where he started focusing mostly doing drawings. Eventually, his works as an artist evolved into other forms of art.

The video “Albrecht Durer: Image of a Master” discusses the important contributions Durer in art, in particular with painting and printmaking. Durer used paint and printmaking to portray fascinating artworks that included religious images that were influenced by other works from around the world. He also did artworks of himself.

The videos are related to the readings because they show how artists were also skilled in other crafts such as printmaking during The Renaissance. Also, artists were renowned for their works, and were very important people during their time.

Both videos are very informative and they show the artists’ origins and how they developed their art through time. Their art was definitely influenced by what was going on in society and how art can have an impact to people and the world of art. In addition, the videos add more depth and understanding about during The Renaissance Age.

Module 8: Video Reviews

I chose to select the video “Late Gothic Art and Architecture: England, 1400-1547” because I was interested in learning about gothic art and architecture. I have travelled to England before and I have noticed many buildings looked old and medieval. After watching the video, I have learned that these buildings were built from the gothic age.

A key concept in the video “How Art Made The World 1 – More Human Than Human” is that images that were made thousands of years ago shapes the images that exist in our world today. The thousands of years of history in art has also shaped civilization. Also, with the creation of human like sculptures throughout the thousand years, it always showed the same exaggerated features, in particular with the emphasis of the breasts and stomach. Every Venus sculpture found from different places around the world had these certain features. More importantly, everything that has been made in art and architecture for those thousands of years are reflected by culture, and therefore each culture has its own style.

Moreover, a key concept in the video “Late Gothic Art and Architecture: England, 1400-1547” is that this period of time was great for art and architecture. Many of the remaining gothic art and architecture that remains now came from this period in time. Finest arts from the 15th century remain in art exhibits and museums. However, the architecture that remains from this time are mostly religious places. Furthermore, another key concept was that higher authority commissioned most of the art from the 15th century.

These videos relate to the text by showing how different art and architecture from different regions have similarities because of the way people perceived beauty in art, while also differentiate due to the influence of culture. The textbook discusses the long history of art has proven that culture has been preserved through time while also preserving certain conditions of art through traditions. Also, the role of religion in art history is discussed in the textbook, and how the spread of Christianity in different regions in Europe has also influenced the development of art and architecture among different countries.

Both videos are interesting to watch and were very informative in the history of art. The first video adds more depth to the topic of how art remains to be influenced by culture despite what period of time it is made. Furthermore, the second video discusses more about the topic of how art and architecture that remains today.

Module 7: Video Review

In the video “Architecture: The Science of Design”, buildings have certain components that makes them withstand natural elements such as the wind, and there are certain regulations and planning needed before they are built. When planning for the building, but also study the risks that weather and earthquakes can have in the building’s location.

In the video “Frank Gehry: Architecture as Art”, Gehry developed his own architecture vocabulary. Also, Gehry started working with homes first where he experimented with designs that he eventually inspired larger projects. Gehry also was concerned with the building and location, prioritized the use of natural light, and the connection between the building and the used.

The videos relate to the reading as the reading discusses structural systems in architecture, which are what makes a structure have its features as well as gives its function.

Both of the videos that I have watched seem old but is very informative on architecture. The videos add more information including the importance of Frank Gehry and his contributions to architecture.

I chose to watch the first video because I was interested in learning more about Frank Gehry. After watching the video, I learned more about the contributions he has made for architecture. Furthermore, I chose to watch the second video because it was interesting to see how architecture is carefully planned because there are natural elements that need to be considered.
