Module 15: Art Gallery Visit #3: Self-Portraits Art Making/Material Exploration

I visited Albright-Knox Art Gallery and found three inspiration works for my self-portrait.

Yasuo Kuniyoshi
I Think So, 1938
oil on canvas
support: 40 x 31 inches (101.6 x 78.74 cm); framed: 47 x 38 3/4 x 2 1/8 inches (119.38 x 98.42 x 5.4 cm)

Seymour Haden
Unfinished Portrait Sketch, 1864
drypoint
image area: 8 3/8 x 5 1/2 inches (21.27 x 13.97 cm); sheet: 11 1/2 x 8 7/8 inches (29.21 x 22.5425 cm); mat: 19 1/4 x 14 1/4 inches (48.895 x 36.195 cm)

Joshua Reynolds
Self Portrait of the Artist as a Deaf Man , ca. 1775
oil on canvas
support: 29 1/2 x 24 inches (74.93 x 60.96 cm)

I chose the pieces to inspire my portrait because I wanted to show a simple self-portrait of myself.

I chose to use pencil for my self-portrait because I wanted to draw my work hands-on rather than using other materials. It was challenging to create a self-portrait because there were times that I want to make the image look better, but I have to draw exactly how I looked like. Moreover, the piece represents me exactly as I am. I am a simple person, and my self-portrait shows the simpleness that I have. The elements and principles I used are lines and shapes. I wanted to make the art as a drawing. In addition, I enjoyed working on this project because it made me draw a self-portrait of myself. My final work however is not perfect, as I feel that my drawing skills is not as good compared to artists.
