Module 2: Learning About Creativity, Philosophy of the Art, and Aesthetics

Learning About Creativity, Philosophy of the Art, and Aesthetics

The video “Aesthetics: Philosophy of the Arts” discusses how the idea of beauty has transcended throughout time with many philosopher’s offering their perspective on how beauty comes to mind when someone sees art.

The philosopher’s theory on aesthetics that is the most important is of Immanuel Kant from the 18th century. Kant mentioned that the beauty in art is not governed by concepts, and beauty cannot be described specifically easily. Each person has a different perception of beauty in art, and that is why there are many different kinds of art with various themes.

The video by CARTA discusses the research of neurobiologists on artistic creation. The video talks about how the creativity comes from human experiences, and there is evidence in history through making discoveries and using tools. Also, aesthetics in art appeals us because of being beautiful but also unique.

In the article “What the brain draws from: Art and neuroscience”, people’s perception of art varies because of experiences, knowledge, and familiarity that they have with the art. So when a person recognizes something familiar in art such as an image of a face, it is easier for the brain to analyze the colors, lines, and lighting.

The videos and the article relates to the text by connecting the relationship of philosophy and science with art and art history. The videos discuss the philosophies of beauty in art, while the article discusses how the brain senses art in different ways. They add more depth to the readings in the book by providing examples in our society that are more relatable. For example, in the CARTA video, the speaker talks about how we get aesthetic jolt by seeing something beautiful and attractive to our eyes and minds. Similarly, aesthetics in art brings the same feelings to the person.
